The Tehy Manager of Care for the Elderly of the Year 2026 has been chosen. The winner is Minna Johansson from Turku, who was nominated for the award by her entire work community.

The award is presented annually to a manager who has significantly promoted the quality of care for the elderly, the wellbeing of the staff, and client orientation.

Johansson’s workplace is part of Tyks Hospital Services, which operate in the Wellbeing Services County of Southwest Finland. She works as a supervisor at Mäntymäki Hospital’s Geriatric Emergency Department and Geriatric Memory Ward.

Few supervisors are as inspiring and open to development.

According to her work community, the work of the departments under Johansson’s supervision is strongly focused on improving the care and living conditions of older people.

Johansson discusses matters, negotiates, listens to the staff and encourages open communication.

– When it comes to the department’s operations, staff skills and new ways of working, few supervisors are as inspiring and open to development, Johansson’s work community writes in their statement of reasons.

Leadership is reflected in commitment

Johansson is able to create a safe and encouraging atmosphere where everyone has the opportunity to be heard and to feel that their work is meaningful. Her leadership is reflected in a committed staff, good cooperation and smooth day-to-day operations.

For Johansson, the award is a great honour, and she is moved to hear the reasons given by her work community.

– A good leader is only as good as their subordinates. I help them, and they help me when necessary. You can enjoy your work and have fun at the workplace, Johansson says.

Equality and fairness are values that are important to Johansson. She is open with her subordinates and takes their different life situations into account. Johansson emphasises that work must be flexible and accommodate people’s different life situations.

– I want to focus time and effort on our staff because it fosters commitment and retention.

Johansson has a total of 50 subordinates. According to them, Johansson is a pillar in her departments, caring about and looking after her staff’s coping.

Challenges in communication

Johansson has been following the difficult financial situation of the wellbeing services counties with concern. She says that there are also challenges in the flow of information.

– Decisions on day-to-day matters are taken at too high a level, and the nurse managers’ voices are no longer being heard.

Johansson would like to see supervisors be informed of decisions in good time. She wants to know what any changes mean in practice before she instructs the staff. Currently, information is being conveyed slowly, and this is causing uncertainty.

Johansson began her career in 1987 as an assistant nurse. She completed her nurse training in 1995 and has since undertaken a great deal of specialist training.

She has also completed management training courses and is currently attending the Management School of the trade union Tehy. Johansson took up her current post in 2016.

Since 2002, the La Carita Foundation has been presenting recognition awards to teams and distinguished leaders for their excellent work with elderly people. The award presented today is the 13th recognition award to a manager of care for the elderly. It was presented in conjunction with Tehy’s ‘Good Care for Older People’ training day. The award was presented for the first time in 2011.
