Become a student member here if you are studying full-time for a degree in social care, health care, early childhood education and care and rehabilitation. Student membership is free of charge!

Become a full member here if you already have a degree in the field and you are about to start full-time post-graduate studies. The membership fee depends on what you study. Full-time post-graduate students for a basic degree covered by Tehy are exempt from the membership fee!

You are a full-time student if you gain an average of 4.5 credits per month of studies or study at least 25 hours a week (if study progress is not measured in credits). Homework and similar exercises do not count. If your studies do not meet these criteria, you will be charged the normal membership fee, which is 1.1% of your salary.

If you work in any field alongside your studies, you should also join the Sotekassa. Joining the fund is like getting an insurance policy for unemployment. Tehy pays the fund membership fee for you. You can join the unemployment fund with the Tehy membership form: in the form, check the option ‘Liityn  työttömyyskassaan’ (I want to join the Sotekassa).

Congratulations! If you have just graduated or are near the end of your studies, remember to update your membership to full member status. Your student membership will not automatically become a full membership. You must fill in a new membership form upon graduation. This will make you a full member of Tehy.

Do you already have a degree in the field and are you in the process of obtaining another one? In this case, you have joined Tehy as a post-graduate student through the professional branch and your Tehy membership will continue uninterrupted.

If you are uncertain about the type of your membership or the time of your graduation, you can check them easily through the online service. You can also use the online service to contact Tehy, if you have questions regarding your membership.

Get involved in the student association’s activities! We highlight the students’ perspective to support Tehy’s decision-making. We address and influence matters concerning students in the context of studies and working life.

Tehy’s student association is the largest of its kind in the field of social care, health care and education. We have our own active board, which is elected in conjunction with the annual meeting each year. All Tehy students can take part in the annual meeting.

We have great people and a high morale! We cooperate closely with the student unions of the Finnish Confederation of Professionals STTK.

Our insurance protection is a valuable member benefit that offers significant security both at work and during your free time.

Employer-provided insurance doesn’t cover all incidents that may occur during work or traineeships. As a Tehy member, you receive the essential insurance coverage you need for your profession – all included in your membership. In addition, you’re protected by a leisure-time accident insurance – this benefit is available exclusively to student members.

If necessary, we can provide you with legal aid in disputes and criminal cases to do with your role or position or practising your profession in Finland. The excess fee for this is €0. Tehy will pay the costs for the legal proceedings. Read more about legal aid. 

If you have problems at work, we can help
Tehy union representatives are available in the workplace for you. You can ask them about matters to do with your employment or pay, for example. You can also contact our specialists. 

For example, Tehy can help you in the following situations:

• You do not understand your contract or you would like someone to check it.
• You want to know what the right pay level is for your role.
• You want to check whether your bonuses or salary calculation is correct.
• You want to know about the regulations governing working life in Finland.
• You are experiencing discrimination or racism at work.
• You want to know about shifts or annual holiday.

In Finland, authorities also have duties relating to working life. For example, Tehy cannot help with finding a job, as this is the role of the TE services.

Learn and grow with us
Take part in trainings, study days and webinars. You’ll maintain and develop the skills your profession requires. Most of our training events are free of charge for members. You can also apply for a grant from us to support some of your studies. Explore our event and training calendar to see what’s available.

Events and gatherings bring us together
Join us for unique events and gatherings. We organize a large member event at least once a year, along with other leisure activities throughout the year.

You can take part in our activities all across Finland. Your local branch also arranges events and activities for its members.

Students can influence the future direction of Tehy and work in the field. A council, which is elected from members on every fourth year, is Tehy’s highest decision-making body. Students can vote and be elected as decision-makers. This is rare for a trade union!
