I got involved in the activities of my local branch about 15 years ago. I can honestly say that at the time I didn't really even know what Tehy and the branch were all about. I was pretty much told that if I did not get involved, there would be no spring cruise, and that all I had to do was go there a couple of times a year for dinner.
Well, the reality was quite different, as the restructuring project of the local branches in the private sector had just started and I also attended many training courses during my first term on the board.
After the restructuring training, I felt that I had received a thorough introduction to Tehy and the activities of the local branch. Then it was time to get on with the job, together with my colleagues on the board. In practice, this has meant contacting members, organising various events and preparing objectives for collective agreement negotiations.
I have never regretted that I got involved.
In all these years, I have never regretted for a moment that I got involved. The best thing about it all has been the people I've had the pleasure of working with. On our board, we have always tried to make sure that we have a laugh at every meeting, even though we discuss issues that are sometimes a bit difficult and very closely related to work.
If you are interested in developing the world of work, joining the board of a local trade union branch is a tangible way to start. There you can see in concrete terms how you, the board, the members and Tehy can have their voice heard and make a difference in the development of the world of work.
To get started, all you need is a curious mind and the courage to stand for election. Thorough training is provided by the local branch and Tehy.
