Tehy supported the non-fiction book of the respected author Riku Siivonen, in which childbirth is depicted through the father’s eyes and the invaluable work of midwives is highlighted

Elämän ja kuoleman huone describes fatherhood during childbirth, at a moment when life and death are separated by a thin line. Riku Siivonen, a renowned author, delves into fatherhood and emotions in his new book. In the book, the voices of midwives are also heard. Millariikka Rytkönen will interview Riku Siivonen at the Akateeminen kirjakauppa in Helsinki on May Day Eve and welcomes all Tehy members to the event.

Tehy, the trade union for social care, healthcare and education professionals, has supported the writing of the Elämän ja kuoleman huoneessa book. The book will be released on Wednesday 30 April at 16:00 at the Helsinki Akateeminen kirjakauppa bookshop, where Tehy President and midwife Millariikka Rytkönen will interview Riku Siivonen about the topics of the book. The event is free of charge.

Rytkönen says that, while reading the book, she was so touched that she wanted to hug the father in the book.

“ In some sections of the book, I howled with laughter. The book offers a completely new perspective into this world, which, for me as a midwife, is simultaneously very familiar and wonderfully strange. These stories are so beautiful and animalistic that it feels like my soul has been touched.”

The publisher of the book, Aula & Co, says that the book by Riku Siivonen is honest, reflective and humoristic. It explores the father’s role in the birthing room and how the culture around childbirth has, over the years, evolved from a world only accessible to women to a more father-inclusive space.

The midwives who witness the whole spectrum of childbirth, from love to pain, surprises, enormous joy and crises, play a major role in the book.

The book also illustrates how the experience of childbirth can affect fathers in ways that are rarely talked about. It offers a unique exploration of the modern portrayal of men.

Riku Siivonen (born in 1977) is an experienced reporter and scriptwriter and, first and foremost, a father. He has worked for the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle and works as a writer on the Docventures show, for example.
