Tehy to showcase Finnish nursing and advocacy at the world's largest nursing congress in Helsinki

On 9–13 June 2025, the congress of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) will bring nearly 7,000 nurses from over 100 countries to Helsinki. The theme of the event is Nursing Power to Change the World. Tehy is participating in the congress as a major sponsor, illustrating Finnish nursing and advocacy.

Tehy will showcase its role as an advocate for Finnish nursing and a promoter of good working conditions to the international congress audience. The organisation will have its own booth in the exhibition area throughout the congress.

The week-long programme will cover a wide range of current topics in nursing, from occupational wellbeing and education to global crises and technological innovations. At the congress, Tehy will emphasise the importance of strong advocacy for the wellbeing, salary development and safety of nursing staff.

"Our duty is to ensure that Finnish nurses have adequate support and security in their working life. It is one of the cornerstones of the entire welfare state. We are helping to shape the future of nursing both in Finland and through international cooperation," says Tehy’s President Millariikka Rytkönen.

Finnish nursing to receive great visibility

Hosting the congress in Helsinki puts a spotlight on Finnish nursing and its long history. The congress is organised in collaboration with the ICN by the Finnish Nurses Association, which is also celebrating its 100th anniversary.

There is shared history with Tehy as well: back in 1982, the Nurses Association, together with other health care organisations, founded Tehy to look after their interests. Tehy warmly congratulates the Finnish Nurses Association on a hundred years of work for Finnish nursing and its recognition.

This is also a historic moment for Finnish nursing in general, as the ICN congress was last held in Finland exactly one hundred years ago, in 1925.

"Finnish nursing is internationally respected and uniquely structured. It is a great honour – and a sign of recognition and trust – that such a significant event is to be held in Finland again," says Rytkönen.

Tehy and the Finnish Nurses Association work closely together within the family of health care organisations in Finland, complementing each other. Both organisations share the goal of strengthening nursing and its status in Finland and internationally. Tehy is responsible for advocacy related to the salaries and working conditions of health care staff, while the Finnish Nurses Association focuses on the professional advocacy of nurses. Tehy also helps to develop leadership in nursing and strengthen its position, which is an important part of advocacy both domestically and internationally.

Tehy’s congress booth will offer visitors discussions, expert information and an opportunity to explore the importance of advocacy in future nursing. Rytkönen will visit Tehy’s booth on Tuesday 10 June at 13:00–14:00.
